Another Solar EBike!
Jun 18, 2020in: community
This is another ebike, this time built from an ordinary bicycle using a rim mounted friction drive. Designed for a now-defunct client, these surplus parts ended up in our storage closet waiting to be put to use. Waste not, want not.
The bike is front wheel drive for the electric components, so that it does not interfere with pedaling the rear wheel. The downside is you have to pedal with the motor engaged, making this an assistance bike rather than a true electric bike. The advantage, of course, is that there’s no drag from the electric drive when not in use, making it a regular bike the rest of the time.
With the solar panel in the back, the whole assembly is relatively heavy (we did not bother weighing it) but helps to take weight off of the rear wheel and balance the bike, especially when driving the front wheel. The solar panel also acts as a cargo cover, since there’s plenty of room underneath for groceries.
